Betsy was at the library hovering over her computer screen, looking up facts on stalking when June stopped behind her and leaned over her shoulder. “What are you so intent on? Must be good.”

“I’m researching stalking. Listen to this. ‘One in six women and one in nineteen men have experienced stalking victimization during their lifetime in which they felt very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed. Persons aged eighteen to twenty-four years experience the highest rate of stalking.’ And it’s a problem on college campuses. I had no idea.”

“I didn’t either. Your sister is on campus. Is that the reason you’re looking this up? Is Leann in trouble?”

“Yes, she is, and that is why I’m looking into it.”

“Oh, no.”

“I thought she was doing fine. But she’s not and I just found out about it the other night. Now, I’m wishing she was going to school closer to one of us.”

“I can understand that. Maybe she could transfer to the University of Memphis.”

“Eighty percent of campus stalking victims know their stalker. The guy who has been stalking her was her algebra tutor.”

“Oh, wow. He wasn’t her professor was he? Because you could have him fired.”

“No, he’s another student. And he must have pulled something because he was in the same class with her that he was tutoring her for. That’s not normal.”

“Wow. No, it’s not.”

“I’m trying to figure out what exactly we can do about this guy.”

“Right. Good plan.”

“One study shows about a third of students on campus have been stalked during their lifetimes. College campuses are an ideal environment for stalkers since they are relatively closed-in communities where daily routines and regular behaviors can easily be monitored. More importantly–both stalkers and their victims are measurably more intelligent than average. The higher intelligence of stalkers accounts for their resourceful and manipulative skills when their intelligence is misdirected.”

“Great. That probably means they are harder to catch.”

“She just wants him to stop, but I don’t think he’s going to unless the police get involved. He was texting her the other night when we went out. Even after she asked him to stop. “

“Oh wow, so he wasn’t just following her around campus? If he kept it up while she’s here… oh hey, and didn’t she skip this semester to take some time off?”

“Yes, she did.”

“She’s not in classes and she’s not on campus, but he’s still harassing her?”

Betsy nodded.

“Betsy that does not sound good.”

“I don’t think there’s anything good about these kinds of guys. They list the different types of stalkers on this site, but really we don’t know enough about Malcolm Hess to know just how dangerous he is. He could be a real nut job. I’d feel better if Leann came to live with me.”

“Will she do that?”

“I don’t know, but I’m going to ask her tonight.”

“I know how much you must worry about her going back to campus.”

“Yes, I do.”

“I hope she says yes.”

“Me too.”
